Natural stone care

How we approach it

Stone is the one surface in a mountain home where the wrong cleaner does permanent damage. Marble, travertine and limestone are calcium based, so anything acidic, and that includes most supermarket bathroom sprays, vinegar and plenty of tile products, etches microscopic pits into the polish. What is left is a dull, cloudy patch that no amount of cleaning brings back.

We work the other way around. The stone and its finish get identified first, then cleaned with pH-neutral chemistry and controlled moisture, with the grout lines treated alongside.

Entries, mudrooms, kitchen floors, bathrooms and fireplace surrounds are where we see it most, usually alongside carpet or tile in the same house.

What stone runs into up here

De-icer on entry stone

Magnesium chloride tracked in off the drive leaves a white haze and keeps pulling moisture out of the air. It rinses out, but never with an acidic cleaner.

Acidic cleaners

The most common damage we see is self-inflicted. If a bathroom spray has been used on marble, those dull patches are etching, not soil.

Grit underfoot

Sand and trail grit work like sandpaper on a polished floor. Getting it off the surface matters more than any product.

Hard water in wet areas

Showers and sills build a mineral film that reads as dirty stone. It needs the right chemistry, not a harder scrub.

The process

Five steps, every visit

The Deep-Fiber Care sequence adapts to the surface, but the order never changes.

Where are you? Natural stone care is available in Vail, Avon, Edwards, Eagle, Aspen & Snowmass and Summit County.

  1. Pre-inspection

Fiber, pile and problem spots checked, so the treatment fits the room.

  2. Eco-friendly pre-spray

Matched to the fiber, it loosens soil before anything is extracted.

  3. Deep extraction

Dirt, allergens and mountain dust pulled from the base of the pile.

  4. Spot and stain removal

Wine, coffee, pet accidents and mud each get targeted treatment.

  5. Fast-dry, residue-free finish

No sticky film to attract new dirt, and rooms back in use sooner.

Will cleaning fix dull or cloudy patches?

Often not, and it is better to hear that first. Cloudy patches on marble and travertine are usually etching, where an acid ate the polish. Cleaning removes soil; etching is surface damage, and restoring it is honing and polishing work, which is a different job. We will tell you which one you have.

Do you seal stone?

Tell us what you are after when you book. Sealing is quoted separately, because whether it is worth doing depends on the stone, the finish and where it sits.

Can stone be done with the carpet in one visit?

Yes, and it usually should be. Entries and kitchens sit right beside the carpeted rooms, so doing both at once leaves the house at one standard. That is the idea behind a Total Home Refresh.
